Olaplex Dry Shampoo Review: A Game-Changer

I am not a fan of dry shampoo. I’ve tried countless brands, including all the best-sellers from drugstore to high-end, and none worked for my hair. They were either too heavy, left a noticeable residue, or didn’t absorb oil as well as I wanted.

So I went out on a limb and purchased Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo the day it launched on Sephora since I am such a fan of Olaplex products for damaged hair.

You can read all about my thoughts on Olaplex products in this Olaplex review and this post on Olaplex alternatives.

I’ve never met an Olaplex product that I didn’t like. And…after trying this Olaplex dry shampoo, the streak continues because I am blown away with the formula that is different from any dry shampoo I’ve ever tried.

I’ll dive into all the details in this Olaplex dry shampoo review and share my experience with using this Olaplex product.

Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo

Olaplex Dry Shampoo Review: Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo.

Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo absorbs oil and detoxifies your scalp for a clean, fresh scalp and voluminous hair.

What makes it stand out in the sea of dry shampoos is that Olaplex uses dry cleansing technology, so the dry shampoo feels weightless, and your scalp and hair don’t feel weighed down, powdery or stiff.

It won’t leave any white powdery residue, and it also won’t clog your pores, which is very helpful if you have an oily scalp.

Like every other Olaplex product, it contains Olaplex’s patented Bond Building Technology that put them on the map.

This technology features the ingredient Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate which helps to strengthen weak and broken disulfide bonds in your hair.

Olaplex repairs hair damage from the inside out, resulting in stronger, shinier, healthier hair with reduced breakage and split ends.

Perfect for frizzy, brittle, damaged, dry hair, Olaplex technology repairs hair damage from chemical treatments, hot tools, styling, aging and even damage from the environment.

Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo: Key Ingredients

Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate: Olaplex’s patented ingredient works to repair and rebuild broken disulfide bonds in your hair that are generated through chemical, thermal, and mechanical damage.

It helps strengthen your hair from root to tip and increases resiliency.

Rambutan Seed Extract: This extract from rambutan seeds contains protective antioxidants that detoxify your hair and scalp while neutralizing pollutants and other impurities that can cause odor.

Per the manufacturer, it increases scalp hydration and protects from pollution.

Bentonite: An oil-absorbing clay with a negative ionic charge that attracts positively charged bacteria and other impurities to detoxify your scalp.

Oryza Sativa Starch: This ultra-fine micro starch is a mattifier that absorbs oil while leaving none of that dreaded white residue that can be a tell-tale sign of dry shampoo.

Plus, it won’t clog pores or leave any unwanted buildup on your scalp. Leaves your hair soft with a lift.

Zeolite: Zeolite is a mineral that has a unique ability to absorb oils, odors, and impurities, making it an effective ingredient for keeping your hair and scalp feeling fresh and clean.

Zeolinte is excellent for fine hair, as it provides texture and volume.

Cetrimonium Chloride: A surfactant that controls frizz and flyaways.

This dry shampoo is gluten-free, nut-free, paraben-free, phosphate-free, phthalate-free, and sulfate-free.

It’s formulated for every hair type and texture and is color-safe, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Benzene test results of Olaplex dry shampoo: not detected (<0.1 ppm).

In Olaplex’s independent consumer study of 30 males/females ages 18+ after three consecutive uses, 100% of participants saw no white residue (yay!), 97% saw a reduction of oil, and 97% said their hair looked clean.

Olaplex Dry Shampoo Review

While I didn’t have high hopes for Olaplex Nº.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo, the first time I used it was on day 3 hair that really needed washing.

My hair gets oily and itchy if I don’t wash it every two days, so waiting until day 3 was a stretch.

I sectioned my hair and gave extra attention to areas around my hairline, the crown of my head, and base of my scalp, where it tends to get irritated and itchy.

After waiting 30 seconds and massaging my scalp, the first thing I noticed was that there was NO WHITE RESIDUE!

What? How? I couldn’t understand that there was no residue because every dry shampoo I’ve used in the past left my hair with a powdery or gritty feel that I didn’t like.

Olaplex dry shampoo doesn’t contain talc like many dry shampoos but uses ultra-fine rice starch to absorb oil.

Olaplex: A Wet Dry Shampoo

As you can see from the image above, it applies as a liquid (a wet dry shampoo), and then once it dries (it contains Alcohol Denat. that evaporates), there is no unwanted residue left over.

This alone was a revelation to me. Even though I have blonde hair, dry shampoos often leave my blonde hair looking white. If you have dark hair, you might just love this dry shampoo for this benefit alone.

It did a great job of removing excess oil without weighing down my straight hair. Its easy to use and freshens my hair after a day (or three!) of not washing it.

This dry shampoo feels like it is actually cleaning my hair.

Plus, the signature Olaplex fragrance is a fantastic citrusy scent and light enough not to overwhelm you. I actually look forward to using this dry shampoo because I love the scent.

You don’t even need to use Olaplex shampoo and conditioner or other Olaplex products in your hair care routine to see the benefits of this dry shampoo.

It extends wear without any itchiness and leaves my hair with a bit of volume too. So if you have a sensitive scalp, this dry shampoo might be worth a try.

Olaplex Dry Shampoo Drawbacks

Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo is the best dry shampoo I’ve ever tried. But it comes at a price.

It’s not cheap. While no Olaplex product is cheap, I think this dry shampoo is worth every penny for its superior performance, oil control, and resulting natural-looking hair and healthy scalp.

How To Use Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo

Shake the bottle well. Separate hair into sections. Hold the bottle 6-10” from your head and spray it on your roots.

Wait for 30 seconds, and then massage the product into your scalp.

You can use this dry shampoo in between hair wash days or on first-day hair to volumize and complement your hairstyle.

It would be great to use if you want to extend a blowout!

The Bottom Line: Just Wow!

Olaplex doesn’t just focus on your hair but also addresses scalp health with this dry shampoo.

Now if I’m in a time crunch, I know I can quickly apply this product and not worry about greasy hair and an itchy scalp.

Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo is a game-changer for me and a definite repurchase.

After putting this to the test, I don’t mind letting my hair go a little longer without washing it when I have this dry shampoo on hand.
