I’ve tested quite a few e.l.f. skincare products this past year and they never fail to impress. Which is saying something since drugstore skincare doesn’t always live up to the claims. What makes e.l.f. (which stands for Eyes, Lips, Face) stand out even further is their incredibly low product pricing. In my experience, e.l.f. represents inexpensive effective drugstore skincare at its finest.
While The Ordinary and The Inkey List are other budget-friendly skincare brands that I love, e.l.f. has one up on both of these brands in relation to ease of access. Their products are sold in most drugstores and mass retail outlets like Target in the US. The Ordinary and The Inkey List available at specialty beauty retailers like Ulta and Sephora. (If only there were an Ulta or Sephora on every corner!)
So when e.l.f. launched its Full Spectrum CBD Skincare Collection recently, I jumped online and ordered the entire collection to give it a try. (It’s currently available at ulta.com). You may be wondering why bother with trendy CBD in skincare products. Well, you may be surprised to learn that CBD can be very helpful to the skin.

What is CBD?
Before we discuss the benefits of CBD in skincare, let’s first discuss what CBD is. CBD stands for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol, a variety of cannabinoid, is a non-psychoactive compound extracted from cannabis sativa plant, also known as the hemp plant and marijuana.
CBD vs THC
While CBD is non-mind-altering, THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound found in cannabis sativa plants. CBD and THC are found in both hemp and marijuana. The difference is that CBD is present in higher amounts in hemp, while THC is present in higher amounts in marijuana. Hemp contains 0.3% or less of THC and marijuana contains more than 0.3% of THC.
CBD products have exploded in the retail sector thanks to their ability to help with many conditions such as anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain. It is important to note that CBD is not regulated by the FDA. As a result, not all CBD products are created equal and there are many companies that are taking advantage of CBD’s popularity. Their marketing may be misleading without the regulation to confirm their potency or authenticity of their ingredients, so it’s important to do your research prior to purchasing CBD products.
When reviewing the label of products containing CBD, if a CBD product is denoted in milligrams, that will at least let you know how much CBD is in the product. (All products in the e.l.f. CBD Skincare Collection contain Full Spectrum CBD that is denoted in milligrams.). Product ingredient labels should list cannabidiol, CBD, or hemp-derived CBD as an ingredient.
How Does CBD Benefit the Skin?
Although definitive research has yet to be completed, it is believed that CBD can benefit the skin in a multitude of ways. While you often see CBD in the form of ingestible oil and capsules, use of CBD on the skin is another delivery option since our skin has cannabinoid receptors.
CBD is a potent antioxidant, so its anti-inflammatory benefits could be applied to skincare related issues such as eczema and the irritation and redness that comes along with this condition.
Research published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation discovered that CBD also has oil regulating properties, so there is quite a bit of promise for the use of CBD in treating acne and breakouts.
In regard to anti-aging benefits, CBD may protect skin from free radical damage, UV rays, and other environmental aggressors. These stressors can lead to the physical signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles and hyperpigmentation and dark spots. By reducing free radical damage, the skin will show fewer signs of aging and retain a more youthful appearance.
While the potential is there, remember that we are in the early stages of learning about the benefits of CBD in skincare. Personally, I look mostly for the soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits of skincare products made with CBD, as opposed to anti-aging benefits. I’m sticking to tried and true ingredients such as retinoids and vitamin C for anti-aging benefits.
What is Full Spectrum CBD?
What exactly is Full Spectrum CBD? Full Spectrum CBD contains not only cannabidiol but also other cannabinoids found in the cannabis sativa plant. It is believed that since all of the cannabinoids work together in harmony, the result is a more effective product. The following e.l.f. skincare products all contain Full Spectrum CBD.
e.l.f. Cosmetics Full Spectrum CBD Skincare Collection
This Full Spectrum CBD Skincare Collection from e.l.f. is all about reviving, soothing, and calming the skin. All e.l.f. skincare products are free from Parabens, Sulfates, and Phthalates, are Vegan and Cruelty-Free. The ingredient lists of these products specifically note that they contain less than 0.3% THC.
I was wondering if these products would have a fragrance, since some CBD products smell like marijuana. Not these products. Although, please note that these products do contain fragrance, if that is an issue for your skin. All products with the exception of the eye cream are scented with fragrance notes of Japanese citrus and chamomile. It is a light pleasant herbal scent.
NOTE: The prices of the products in this skincare collection are not the usual rock bottom that you find with other e.l.f. skincare and makeup products. They are still very reasonably priced with all products under $20 each, and considering the levels of CBD that they contain, I think these products are well worth their price tags. Here are the current prices and links to their product pages on Ulta.com:
- e.l.f. Cosemetics 50 mg CBD Moisturizer – $15.00
- e.l.f. Cosmetics 100 mg CBD Facial Oil – $18.00

e.l.f. Cosmetics 50 MG CBD Moisturizer is formulated with hyaluronic acid and sweet almond oil for moisture retention. It contains 50 mg of Full Spectrum CBD. The texture is that of a gel-cream. Like most other products in this collection, this moisturizer is fragranced and contains notes of chamomile and Japanese citrus.
CBD’s antioxidant properties make this a perfect moisturizer for both day and evening use. This moisturizer is very lightweight and does not leave your skin greasy or shiny, just moisturized and soft. It works well with makeup, too. This is a lovely moisturizer that is lightweight and soothing. The weightless texture is absorbed quickly and the light herbal scent is very calming.
e.l.f. Cosmetics 100 MG CBD Facial Oil contains an impressive 100 mg of Full Spectrum CBD along with a balancing blend of nourishing oils such as sunflower seed oil, sweet almond oil, marula oil, olive fruit oil, and grapeseed oil.
What a gorgeous blend of oils along with 100 mg of CBD. This lightweight oil sinks into the skin without leaving your face feeling like it has a layer of oil on it. It’s quite hydrating and I enjoy using it as the last step in my skincare routine when my skin needs some extra moisture, like when using retinoids. The fragrance notes of chamomile and Japanese citrus are so refreshing and soothing.
e.l.f. Cosmetics 50 MG CBD Eye Cream is formulated with hyaluronic acid and a peptide complex to hydrate soothe and plump the eye area. This brightening eye cream contains 50 mg of Full Spectrum CBD.
CBD has antioxidant properties to protect the delicate skin around the eyes. This eye cream is loaded with additional good for your skin ingredients such as three peptides to boost collagen and improve your skin’s texture, and target under-eye bags. Aloe vera and allantoin soothe the skin. Glycerin and sodium hyaluronate, the salt form of hyaluronic acid, hydrates and moisturizes.
This gel-like cream is very light and quick absorbing. It sometimes tingles after application, so I’m not sure what it is in the formula that I might cause this sensitivity. The sensitivity doesn’t last long though, only a few seconds. This eye cream leaves the skin under my eyes so smooth and feels absolutely weightless. If the skin around your eyes is especially dry, you may want to try another eye cream that has a richer, more moisturizing formula. There is no added fragrance in this eye cream.

e.l.f. Cosmetics 5 MG CBD Lip Oil is formulated with 5 MG of CBD and sunflower extract infusion to nourish and moisturize lips. It contains notes of peppermint and vanilla, a classic uplifting combination that is not too overpowering, but very refreshing.
This lip oil really softens and smoothes my lips. The peppermint and vanilla is such a bright fragrance for this lightweight lip oil. This is the perfect product to apply to your lips under a face mask. Since there is no color, you don’t have to worry about it rubbing off on your mask, and you are protecting your lips from chapping and dehydration.
e.l.f. Cosmetics 50 MG CBD Body Cream contains argan oil and shea butter to moisturize and soothe the skin all over your body along with 50 mg of Full Spectrum CBD. Like most of the other products in the collection, this cream is scented with notes of Japanese citrus and chamomile for a fresh, herbal scent.
This body cream has the texture and feel of a very expensive body product. It is rich and creamy without any sticky feel or film that body creams sometimes leave on your skin. The fragrance is light and fresh. This product is leaps and bounds better than other drugstore body creams that I’ve used. Granted, I don’t have extremely dry skin currently, as I’ve been testing it during the summer, but this body cream is gently hydrating with a light texture and soft scent. Perfect!

e.l.f. Full Spectrum CBD Skincare Collection: Final Thoughts
e.l.f. skincare products continue to impress. This line has the feel of a skincare line that could easily be twice the price. These products don’t have extra filler ingredients and every single one of them contains respectable amounts of Full Spectrum CBD. The only drawback for some may be the fragrance added to most of the products in the collection.
My favorites? The 50 MG CBD moisturizer and the 50 MG CBD Body Cream. For those that are fans of face oils, you should give this one a try. Have you tried this line? What are your favorite products? Let me know in the comments.
