NYX Professional Makeup is known for its highly-pigmented formulas, and the spirit of its home base of Los Angeles, California shines through in the brand’s product offerings. I love so many of their makeup products that I thought I would compile a list of the best of NYX drugstore makeup.
Founded in 1999, by Toni Ko, NYX was named after Nyx, the Greek goddess of the night. Now a subsidiary of L’Oreal, NYX offers a wide range of pro-level makeup products for the makeup junkie that are all cruelty-free. They also have a growing selection of vegan options.
An interesting tidbit about this company is that they do not retouch their marketed makeup looks. They want to provide images of how their products work on real skin without filters and retouching, which goes to show that these products were made to work IRL (in real life)! Here are my picks of the best of NYX drugstore makeup:

NYX HD Studio Photogenic Concealer Wand (shown above in Beige) is a concentrated concealer formulated to correct redness, discoloration, and under-eye circles. It hides blemishes and other imperfections with ease without being too drying or caking.
This best-selling vegan concealer comes in 23 shades including color-correcting yellow, lavender, and green. This lightweight concealer is blendable and stays put. It has a natural finish that doesn’t settle into fine lines and creases.
This concealer is highly-pigmented and really covers my dark circles well. The only drawback for me is that it comes in a somewhat small tube, but for an affordable price, you can purchase multiples without breaking the bank.
NYX Color Correcting Palette contains six color-correcting concealer shades to hide blemishes and other imperfections, to conceal redness, bruising and under-eye circles. It can even camouflage blue tones and yellowness.
These shades can be a little intimidating if you don’t know which shade to use for your skin issues, so this general guide will help you get started. Clockwise from top right:
- Green – Neutralizes redness, i.e. blemishes/acne.
- Pink – Hides dark circles and brightens dull complexions.
- Deep – Conceals imperfections.
- Light – Conceals imperfections.
- Purple – Neutralizes yellow undertones.
- Yellow – Camouflages purple and deep red discolorations such as veins and dark spots.
I was surprised at how creamy the formulas are in this palette. I love using the pink and the light beige as a two-step concealer set to neutralize and brighten my dark under-eye circles.
NYX’s best-selling foundation, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Full Coverage Foundation (shown above in Buff), comes in 40 shades to match nearly all skin tones. This foundation is lightweight, waterproof, and is a highly-pigmented liquid. It provides matte coverage that lasts up to 24 hours.
This vegan foundation controls shine and mattifies your complexion. The full-coverage formula hides uneven skin tone, blemishes, and other imperfections. I use a damp beauty blender sponge to apply and blend since, like other mattifying foundations, this foundation dries quickly.
This non-comedogenic foundation is formulated for normal, oily, combination, and sensitive skin types. Since the coverage is matte, this might not be the best choice for those with dry skin.
NYX Total Control Drop Foundation (shown above in Light) is a liquid dropper foundation that dries to a matte finish. What is so nice about this foundation is that you can easily create sheer to full coverage depending on how many drops that you use.
I love to use just a few drops of this in the summer when I am looking for lightweight coverage. There’s no guesswork when it comes to coverage. You can measure the foundation’s coverage by choosing how many drops you use. It dries to a velvety matte finish and can even be mixed with other foundations such as Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Foundation to adjust the shade or the amount of coverage.
NYX Butter Gloss (shown above in Eclair on the left and Vanilla Cream Pie on the right) is a best-selling fan-favorite lip gloss that provides sheer to medium coverage. The lip gloss comes in 21 shades that range from pale pink to deep burgundy. It is even offered in an electric blue shade (Blueberry Tart). The lip gloss is high shine and never sticky in a silky smooth formula.
This vegan gloss is so pretty and although it’s not highly pigmented, it can be layered for more color. The color lasts and so does the shine. It’s so affordably priced that it’s easy to pick up more than one shade.
If you are looking for a highly pigmented matte lip product, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream (shown above in Istanbul) is for you. This matte lip comes in a huge shade range of 36 colors. There are so many beautiful nudes but there are also bright bold reds and berries. The lightweight formula is creamy and has a sweet scent. It almost feels like a balm going on the lips.
Once it is applied to the lips it immediately transforms into a matte lip color and stays put. This lip cream leaves my lips so velvety smooth and soft. I love applying Butter Gloss on top to get the best of both worlds – highly pigmented color combined with high shine lips.
NYX Makeup Matte Finish Setting Spray is America’s #1 setting spray. It’s a lightweight setting spray that dries to a shine-free matte finish and keeps makeup in place all day. It really keeps makeup from rubbing off and lasts for several hours.
It prolongs the wear of makeup and will also stop mascara and eyeliner from flaking off as the day wears on. You can even spray a little onto your foundation brush prior to applying foundation and concealer to get a gorgeous matte finish.
If matte isn’t your thing, NYX also has a Dewy Finish Setting Spray that provides a dewy finish without looking greasy while keeping your makeup in place all day. You can spray it over each layer of makeup as you apply it and spray it throughout the day to refresh your makeup look. Can’t decide between a matte or dewy finish? Get both the matte and the dewy setting sprays in this 2-pack bundle.
NYX Epic Ink Liner (shown above in Black) has a super-sharp felt brush tip that creates the most divine winged lines. This liquid eyeliner comes in two shades: Black and Brown. The eyeliner is waterproof and highly pigmented to create just the look you want, whether it is more natural or bold and defined.
I took the image above on a light background to show how sharp the flexible tip is which allows for thin precise lines. This eyeliner is also smudge-proof and stays put. Check out this easy tutorial to create a dramatic winged look:
NYX Sweet Cheeks Creamy Powder Blush (shown above in Rose & Play) provides pigmented color to your cheeks with a matte finish and is available in 12 shades. It’s offered in common shades like pinks, corals, and berries as well as a few unique shades in the yellow and purple shade ranges.
This powder blush is silky and pigmented and blends easily onto your cheeks. A little goes a long way with this blush. The finish is a beautifully matte and it is very natural-looking. If you want a more dramatic look, the color is easily buildable.
NYX Micro Brow Pencil (shown above in Taupe) is an ultra-thin mechanical micro brow pencil that is creamy and highly pigmented. You can easily create defined brows with this best-selling vegan pencil that does not require a sharpener.
If you’ve over-tweezed or if your brows are sparse in areas, this pencil will come in very handy. The pencil creates the look of natural brow hairs with its precise super-skinny tip. It is offered in 8 shades and has a built-in spoolie to prep as well as finish your brows to create a defined and polished look.
